Friday 16th December End of Term Assembly - Wentworth Sports Complex, 9.30 - 11.00am. Everyone welcome.
School finishes for 2016 Tuesday 20th December - 12.30pm
We are a collection point for gifts for children who will spend this Christmas at a Ronald McDonald House, while they receive specialist medical treatment.
Drop a present into our office, last drop off day is this Friday 16th December, with a label on it stating either boy/girl and approximate age the gift is for. Thank you to those parents who already have so kindly donated a gift. 
Ray White Manly will make sure the gifts get to a deserving family.

School Disco Cancellation - Again, we would like to apologise for cancelling the disco tonight.  We know how much the children were looking forward to the evening but felt there was no other option at this late stage. Please rest assured that we have lots of discos and fun family events already planned for 2017. We will let you know about these at the beginning of the new school year so that as a family you have plenty of notice. 
REMINDER - please return all library books by this Friday 9th December.  Any outstanding books after this date will be invoiced to you.
Saturday 10th December, Carols on the Canal at the Gulf Harbour Village Rotunda.  Rooms 1, 4 & 5 will be performing from 3.30 - 4.00pm. Bring along a blanket and picnic or buy from the local food stalls.  Father Christmas arrives on the Coastguard boat at 5.00pm.

Tuesday 20th December - Last school day for 2016, 12.30pm finish. Our school bus has been organised to leave at this time.

Thursday 1st December - Year 2/3 Cupcake Sale $2.00, outside the Galley at morning tea time. This is a camp fundraiser.
Friday 2nd December - Whole School Athletics Day.  There will be no Friday Food Day.
After School Care will be closed in the afternoon of Tuesday 20th December - Last day of school.
Reindeer Food Bags $2.00, available at morning tea time outside the front office. Fundraiser for the Year 6's who are graduating.
Year 2/3 Shakespear Overnight Camp payment is now due, please pay through the School Shop or at the front office. Final payment date is next Wednesday 7th December.

Tuesday 22nd November, 7.00 - 8.00pm - Year 2/3 Camp Meeting for parents in the Staffroom.
Friday 25th November, Room 12 are selling fruit kebabs and cupcakes from the Secret Garden. $2.00 each.
School Hats - please remember hats are complusory and must be worn in Term 4 & 1.  With the summer sun appearing please remember to sunblock your children before they come to school. We do have sunblock in all classrooms for children to top up with during the day. Water bottles are also very important for your child to have every day.

Gala Update
Thank you for all your support at our school Gala. We raised a massive $18,000.00, which will go towards our rapidly growing school hall fund and learning resources for your children.
Thank you to everyone who donated, sponsored and helped put this special event together, and a huge thank you especially to our amazing PTA.

Wednesday 26th October Wacky Wednesday Mufti Day - dress in your wackiest clothes and please remember to bring along a can or bottle of drink suitable to be used for our games.
HATS, HATS, HATS - Please make sure your child is wearing the correct GHS hat (available from the uniform shop $18.00 or the old GHS hat is still OK to wear).  It is complusory for all students to wear a hat in Terms 1 & 4.
HELP, HELP, HELP - Please, we need your help either before or on the day of the Gala.  Setting up, manning stalls for an hour or two, cleaning up afterwards.  Many hands make light work - the Gala is for everyone both at school and in our community.  Mel Crosbie (Acting Principal) will be at the front gate to hopefully add a few more names to our list of helpers. Please add yours!!

Thursday 22nd September - End of Term/Final Assembly for our Principal, John Petrie, 9.30 - 11.00am. Everyone Welcome. 
Thursday 22nd September - Celebration Banana Split from Mr Petrie, 2.00pm.
Friday 23rd September - Last day for returning walkathon sponsorship money. Please make sure all money is returned by this date so we can process before the school holidays.
Friday 23rd September - Last day of term 3, school finishes at 3.00pm.
Saturday 24th September, 2.00 - 3.00pm. PTA White Elephant Drop Off - we have an extra day for items to be dropped off to the container in our school grounds for the White Elephant stall at the Gala.
Monday 10th October - School starts back for Term 4. Enjoy the Spring break with your families.
Parent Interviews and Student reports for Term 4
We are currently writing reports for your child which will be sent home with your child at the start of next term. We are also preparing for parent interviews on Tuesday 18th October & Wednesday 19th October 2016. The link to book times for appointments and further information, will be sent out by email during this holiday break. Please keep your diary clear for one of these evenings.
Judith Douche Dance Message - Congratulations to all the year 3 - 6 girls who participated in the Douché Dance Concert at the Whangaparaoa Golf Club on Friday night. Well done for a great performance! Special credit goes to Chloe Lewis who won the year 6 dance trophy.

Pedestrian Crossing Helpers
We are needing to patrol the Alec Craig pedestrian crossing in the mornings from 8.30 - 8.55am.  Are you able to please help, even one day a week, on a roster to help our children cross safely to school.  We will have our Year 6 student monitors out there during this time with the crossing barriers.
Unfortunately we have had reportings of cars just not stopping at the crossing for our students.

GHS Film Festival - WHAT MATTERS! Tuesday 13th September.  Be in quick to get your tickets - they are selling extremely fast, all students are involved in making movies for this amazing screening.  Tickets are available through the School Shop of from the front office.  $7.00 each. 6.00 and 7.30pm sessions.
Monday 19th September - School Walkathon. Information and sponsorship packs will go home this Thursday.

GHS Film Festival - Tuesday 13th September, 6.00 & 7.30pm at Hoyts Whangaparaoa. Friday Food Day Baking
It is with a some sadness that we have made a rather difficult decision to cease having our Food day morning tea bake sales. The sales will end in a few weeks time. While we have a great deal of eager children wishing to purchase a hot chocolate or cake for morning tea we simply do not have the baking to sell.
Purchasing food in to sell is of course an option but a far more expensive one. We thank you for all the support you have given by baking and of course purchasing morning tea treats over the years.

Wednesday 17th August, PTA Mufti Day - children can dress up in the colours of the country they support in the Olympics.  Please remember to bring a donation of a drink to be used for our Gala prizes (please no alcohol).
Thursday 18th August - HBC Interschool Hockey Tournament, Rosedale Park.  If your child is attending they need to have paid the $12.00 before the event.
Friday 19th August - Food Day Friday Baking.  Could parents of Year 6 students please supply baking for our morning tea bake sale. Please drop all baking off to the Food Tech room by 9.00am  Your help is greatly appreciated, thank you.

Thursday 11th August - Whole School Cross Country - Shakespear Park. Years 0 - 3 travelling by bus, cost $3.00 per student.  This payment must be made by tomorrow 10th August, to enable your child to travel by bus. Please come along and support the kids as they demonstrate the school values; Bravery, Resilience, Responsibility & Fun.

Year 0 - 3 will be travelling by bus - $3.00 payable on the school shop or at the office. Please ensure this is paid before the event.
Year 4 - 8 will be walking to and from the park.
Please wear house colours, bring a change of warm clothes, (plastic bag to put wet gear into), running shoes, food, water bottle. Sausages $2, Bottled water $1, milo $1.
Loads of fun, come down and be part of our wonderful school commiunity demonstrating our school values.

The Maori department at Whangaparaoa College are celebrating Matariki (Maori New Year) from 4pm-5.30pm and they've invited the local community. If you would like to attend please join in the celebration and bring your family/whanau along.

Thursday 23rd June - Year 6 Camp cooking day
Any parents of Year 6 students that are willing and able to are welcome to come and help prepare the meals to be taken on camp - your help would be greatly appreciated.  The cooking will be taking place in the Food Tech room from 9.00am.

Friday 10th June - Matua's Army Mufti Day
Matua Murray is our Kaumatua and was present at our first ever school Powhiri last year.  He has been a KapaHaka teacher on the Hibiscus Coast for the last 30 years and is also one of the Kaumatua for the Waitemata and Rodney Police.  He is a valuable member of many community organisations. 
Matua Murray was recently diagnosed with a brain tumour and we as a school (along with other HBC schools) would like to hold this mufti day as a Koha to support him and his wife Mere as they fight through this battle.
Children are invited to wear mufti and give a gold coin donation.

Thursday 19th May - Photolife Class Photos.  Please make sure students are dressed in the correct Gulf Harbour School uniform, not our sports uniform.

2016 International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS)
At GHS we offer the opportunity for our students to participate in external assessme
nts from the University of New South Wales in the International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS). 
These annual assessments are for skills development in key areas of learning for students in
Years 3 – 8; assessments are available in English, Mathematics, Science, Spelling and Writing.
They are administered at school through a 30–60 minute supervised in-school test on the below dates. The writing test will be completed in between the dates of 13 - 17 June.
The results are available to parents and students online; these online reports and analyses remain available indefinitely.

Friday 26th February - Mufti Day supporting child Cancer Foundation through Kiara's Angel Walk.  Dress up in your favourite bright colours and please bring a donation.
Thursday 3rd March - Year 4 - 8 School Swimming Sports at the Leisure Centre.  Students will travel by bus, please make sure you have returned the permission slip and paid the $6.00 per child. Payment through the school shop or the office.
Thursday 3rd March, 7.00pm in the Staffroom - First PTA Meeting for 2016 - come along and see what exciting ideas we have for 2016.  Be part of a great group of parents supporting our school and making a difference for your children.
School Hats are now available at the Uniform Shop - $18.00. Please make sure your child is wearing the correct hat.

Week of 9 February 2016

Welcome to our first weekly Porthole for 2016.  Hope your children all had a great first week back at school.
Friday 12th February - Whole school picnic down at Okorami Bay from 11.15am to 2.00pm.  Students will be walking to and from the park. We do need your help if you are available.  Swimming will be supervised and only available to those students who have permission by bringing their togs. Separate permission slips will not be sent home for this event. Bring your picnic lunch and enjoy the day with your children.
Wednesday 17th February - Meet the Teacher Evening
5.00 - 6.30pm  Bring your picnic dinner and enjoy family time.  Water slide and bungy castles will be available for students to use.
6.30 - 8.00pm  Parents will be able to visit their child's classrooms.
